When I told my mom recently that I was not going to have a home phone line installed when I moved out “on my own” after college graduation, she was not happy. She was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to get a hold of me, and she was also concerned that I wouldn’t be able to sign up for a home alarm system. Alarm systems are pretty non-negotiable for her, and I knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing my home wasn’t being monitored. Luckily, after doing some research, I discovered that there was a wireless security system option. I reassured her I’d still have the monitoring service, but wouldn’t have to pay the unnecessary money for a home phone. I also tried to convince her that a cell phone is a much easier way to get in touch with me, because she’ll never have to worry about whether or not I’m out—she only has one number to call, all the time. It seemed like a pretty good argument to me, but she hasn’t bought in to it so far. It’s a work in progress.
